My work experience at SevenC3

Throughout a three-month internship at SevenC3, I had the opportunity to be part of the various departments of Sainsbury’s magazine and SevenC3.

The whole community at SevenC3 is a warm and welcoming crowd, from the receptionists at the beautiful FORA coworking space to each of the editorial staff members. As a recent publishing master’s graduate, I had the unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the production of a successful commercial magazine.

Each week was different, with its own challenges and learnings and which I very much enjoyed. The work culture at SevenC3 is a buzzing and social environment and regular team events create a family-like atmosphere.

Starting on the digital team, I worked closely with Liz Stansfield and Abbie Schofield. I learnt about SEO and Google Analytics and helped create visual content for social media and the magazine’s CMS platform. I especially enjoyed creating short videos and editing photos for the magazine’s Pinterest, which has a huge following.

Working with Amelie Srikumar on marketing, I put together research on subscription behaviours and competitor analysis. I contacted PR representatives of food, drinks and lifestyle brands to put together goodie bags for a Sainsbury’s magazine’s reader event.

Next up, I was assigned to work with Rosanne Clays and Mailynne Woolley on production. I got to attend photo shoots and help behind the scenes, assisting food stylists and photographers. This was a very exciting experience and something I’d never done before.

My last couple of weeks were spent on editorial with Sarah Maber and Helena Lang and this is definitely the closest to my personal interest and passion, which is writing. One of the most memorable experiences was interviewing Quique Dacosta, the three-star Michelin chef, who sent us home with an actual paella kit. Walking home with the massive pan certainly turned some heads. It also drew the attention of a Valencian man named Frank, who ran back to his house to get me some of his own saffron.

I am so grateful for this experience that taught me so much about the magazine publishing industry – but most importantly, for the people I got to meet and work with over these three months.
